What happened with Davydenko. MATCH FIXING

The bad news of the last few days in tennis are that some top players are investigated for match fixing. Davydenko is one of the names.

What happened in Sopot?

Nikolay Davydenko was playing the [minor] tournament in Sopot (2007) when he was ranked no.4 in the world. The Russian was the overwhelming favorite to win the event and he was meant to have a really easy match against Arguello (ranked 87 at that time).

Interesting enough at the beginning of the match Davydenko was not considered anymore the favorite and big bets were placed against him even after he had an easy start of the match (he won the 1st set and he was leading the second set).

Then “mysteriously” Davydenko had some problems to his foot to ask for some treatment before retiring on a 2-6, 6-3, 2-1 score-line.  Worst of all, it was a group of Russian gamblers that staked millions on Betfair against Davydenko. (difficult not to be suspicious.. isn’t it?)

Betfair

Online betting company Betfair reported its suspicions to the ATP. Mark Davies, managing director, commented. “We have got the worst tennis match that we have ever had on the site.”
