Arthur Rinderknech was forced to withdraw after leading Tomas Martin Etcheverry by two sets to zero. The Frenchman injured his left big toe when he kicked an advertisement sign to show his frustration.
However, he injured himself in the process and was forced to quickly repent for his outburst when he bent down to check on his toe. With a 0-5, the home star was again broken and was given a medical time-out.
Rinderknech explained after the match: “I feel great physically, but I just messed up. I hit the wall, a little annoyed, at 2-0, when I was broken in the fourth set. And I’m not sure at the moment, but I hope I didn’t break my toe. Afterwards, I couldn’t put my foot down.”
Etcheverry delighted the audience with some shadow swings as the physio examined his opponent. The game concluded a few minutes later, so he didn’t need the practice.
Rinderknech went on to play and got to serve for a set point, but he quit before Etcheverry could handle it and later expressed his guilt.
