According to Alex Corretja, Carlos Alcaraz needs to manage his schedule to minimize the number of injuries he sustains.
The world No. 3 entered Roland-Garros with a right forearm injury, the most recent in a string of problems for the 20-year-old, and Corretja emphasized how Alcaraz’s body is being stressed by a demanding schedule.
Corretja talked about Alcaraz recently and said: “I was playing 30 matches a year; he’s playing 60 plus the finals of Slams and Masters at his age. He’s won titles all the way and became world No. 1, so it’s different with the pressure he’s feeling and the desire to become even better. He grew up so fast and he developed his body very soon. That’s why he got some injuries, because otherwise, maybe he wouldn’t still be No. 1.”
He added: “If he had slowly developed, maybe he would’ve been around No. 15, but as he got there so quickly, it’s normal what happened to him. He needs to control the schedule, which will be key in his career.”
Tim Henman repeated these ideas, pointing out that Jannik Sinner’s preparation for Roland-Garros was hindered by a hip issue. He also considered the broader timetable for every player.
Henman talked generally about it and said: “Just being in that tournament environment, there’s that stress mentally that can affect you physically. It’s very important that they not only play in those big tournaments but also look at their rest and recovery. Then, in their training in the off-season, it is important to make sure they aren’t going to get those injuries because they can hold you back and mean you’re not going to be able to do yourself justice. These guys want to be competing to win the very biggest and best tournaments, and those are the Grand Slams.”
