The organizers of the 2025 Laver Cup announced that Yannick Noah, the 1983 French Open champion, will take over as captain of the European team.
In the yearly tournament, the 64-year-old Frenchman will lead the European squad against a World squad led for the first time by eight-time Grand Slam winner Andre Agassi.
With 23 singles titles and 16 doubles titles under his belt, Noah peaked at No. 3 in July 1986 and became the world’s top doubles player a month later. Since the rankings were first established in 1973, he is the highest-ranked male player from France.
Following his retirement, Noah assumed the position of Davis Cup captain multiple times, leading the French side to victories in 1991, 1996, and 2017.
Noah expressed his remarks after this announcement recently and said: “I love team competitions, the emotions they bring, getting to know the guys, how they are on and off the court as people—it will be great. I also can’t wait to see Andre again after a couple of decades and to face him on the other side. I might have mellowed a bit now, but the competitive side of me is alive forever. I want Team Europe to win!”
Noah will train for his new position at this year’s Laver Cup, which takes place in Berlin from September 20–22, under the direction of Team Europe Captain Bjorn Borg.
Borg said about Noah recently: “I can’t think of a better person to take over this role than my good friend Yannick. He is a great champion, leader and person, and I’m sure he will enjoy being part of this great competition as much as I have. I will of course be wishing him and Team Europe continued success over the years.”
