Former world number six Gilles Simon has expressed his belief that Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have the ability to reach the heights of the tennis elite, commonly referred to as the ‘Big 4’, if they maintain their consistency.
Speaking at the Roland-Garros eSeries by Renault tournament, Simon praised Alcaraz’s potential, likening him to some of the greatest players in the sport. He remarked, “I think that Alcaraz has the level of the big 3 or big 4 that we’ve had because he really has a level that’s very high.”
While acknowledging Alcaraz’s talent, Simon also noted the challenge of maintaining consistency, particularly over an extended period. However, he expressed confidence in the young Spaniard’s ability to continue progressing and potentially reach the same level as the tennis legends.
On the other hand, Simon highlighted Sinner’s impressive consistency, particularly in recent months, which has seen him clinch his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and secure victories in other prestigious tournaments. He noted, “His consistency is reminiscent of that of the Big 4.”
Despite Sinner’s strong performances, Simon emphasized the competitive dynamic between him and Alcaraz, noting Alcaraz’s victory over Sinner at Indian Wells as a significant moment. He observed, “He lost his big match at Indian Wells, against Alcaraz, who suddenly regained his level and overtook him.”
Simon’s insights highlight the evolving landscape of men’s tennis, with Alcaraz and Sinner emerging as formidable contenders poised to challenge the dominance of the established elite.
