Serena Williams comes from behind to beat Diatchenko in the 1st round of the French Open

Williams downs Diatchenko after initial scare

Serena Williams overcame a first set setback to win the first round of the French Open. This is only her second match after the Miami Open in March.

In the opening set, Williams looked a bit sluggish, which allowed her opponent to take the lead. Williams, however, pulled out her strength in the second and the third set to win the match, “Serena’s way.”

The Match

Williams looked rusty and played loose shots in the first set which may be because of the fact that she is coming from a knee injury. She lost her serve in the fifth and the seventh game of the set and lost the set 6-2.

She, however, found her rhythm in the 2nd and the 3rd set and won the match  2-6 6-1 6-0 in 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Williams will now face Kurumi Nara or Dalila Jakupovic in the 2nd round.

After the match Williams commented:

“There is always a lot of fear for a first-round match, I made lots of mistakes in the first set and I just said ‘good luck, Serena.”

“I was strong after that. Now I feel like I need to go and practise.”

This season Serena has been much perturbed by her knee injury and she was even pictured in a wheelchair. She also pulled out of the Italian Open due to her injury. Williams lost to Pliskova in the Australian Open quarterfinals 6-4 4-6 7-5, after that she only played in three tournaments, Indian Wells, Miami, and Rome and withdrew from all.

Serena Williams became the first woman ever to claim her 800th victory in the main draw of a tournament after winning this match.
