Roger Federer beats Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets in the 1st round of the French Open.
Roger Federer is back to Roland Garros after a gap of three years (he had missed the 2016 edition of the tournament on account of injury, then he skipped in 2017 and 2018). He won his first round match against the 73rd ranked Lorenzo Sonego easily in straight sets 6-2 6-2 6-4.
After the match Federer commented:
“I felt on edge at the start, my heart was beating crazily, I felt great playing on this court. It looks very attractive, so congratulations to everyone involved. Hopefully, I can play here again for my next match.”
The Match
Federer hardly showed any sign of leg injury in this match which had forced him out of the Italian Open earlier in the month.
Federer broke twice in the first set which pretty much set the tone of the entire match. The world no.3 won the 1st set in just over 24 minutes.
In the second set, Federer began with a bang, breaking his opponent the opening game of the set (1-0), he again broke Sonego’s serve in the 3rd game to lead 3-0. Sonego did well to break Federer in the 6th game (4-2) but this did not help him as Federer won 6-4.
In the third set Sonego did well to stay with Federer until he handed a break to the Swiss in the 9th game (5-4). Federer held his serve to win the set 6-4.
Federer won the match 6-2 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour and 41 minutes.
Head to Head Federer vs. Otte
Federer is going to face Oscar Otte in the 2nd round. The world no. 145 commented: “I would be surprised if Roger knew my name.”
