Tsitsipas beats Marterer in straight sets

Greek sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas comfortably beat German world number 110 Maximilian Marterer to reach the second round of the French Open.

The sixth seed Tsitsipas broke twice in the first two sets and then won the third set in the tie-break to claim the victory in the first round of the French Open.

Tsitsipas has been lately putting up good shows, he reached the final of the Madrid Open by beating the world no.2 Nadal 6-4 2-6 6-3 in the semifinals of the tournament. He also claimed his first clay title by beating Pablo Cuevas 6-3 7-6 (4) to win the Estoril Open. He reached the semifinals of the Italian Open where he lost to Nadal 6-4 6-3. The Greek has won a total of 13 matches this season on clay before coming to Paris.

The Match

Tsitsipas was in full control of the match and didn’t face a break point. There was not much resistance from the German in the first two sets, though he put a better show in the 3rd set but was ultimately unsuccessful.

The Greek won the match 6-2 6-2 7-6(4) in 1 hour 48 minutes.

After the match Tsitsipas commented:

“It is quite different to other tournaments I have played. It is slow. It is not too fast, it is fine. I love playing on this court though. It gives you another energy on the big arenas, these are the moments that we are practising and dreaming of.”

About the match the Greek said:

“I was playing really well the first two sets of the match. Better than I thought I would,” Tsitsipas said. “The third set was tricky. I felt like he started pressing more, started going for his shots more, faster, stronger. It went his way, I was couple times love-30 on his serve. I can say he played pretty well on these moments.”

TOO GOOD!
