Die-hard Zverev wins the title in Geneva after saving 2 MPs!

Zverev conquers his 11th career title after beating Jarry in 3 sets.

Alexander Zverev defeats Nicolas Jarry 6-3 3-6 7-68 in the final in Geneva on Saturday to finally claim his first title of the season after saving 2 match points.

The Match

Zverev won a relative smooth 1st set after he won his only break of the match in the 2nd game (2-0). That was enough for Sascha to win the set as he was pretty solid in his serving game for the rest of the opener (6-3).

Things went to the opposite direction in the second set as it was Jarry to conquer the decisive and only break in the 6th game (4-2) before winning the second set 6-3. This set was plagued by to rain delay when Karry was leading 1-0 and 4-2, but eventually, that didn’t break the rhythm so much.

The third set went straight to a dramatic breaker. Zverev was in firm command with a 4-0 lead and he was inches close to the championship when he had 3 consecutive championship points (6-3). That was the most dramatic moment of the match with Jarry winning 4 consecutive points to have a match point himself (7-6) that he wasn’t able to convert after he missed a rather easy volley. The Chilean had another opportunity to win the match soon after (8-7), but it was Zverev to hang tough, win the next 3 points and conquer the breaker at 8.

The final score was 6-3 3-6 7-68 and the encounter ended after 2 hours and 35 minutes.

Some stats

The German served very well to win 75% of the points 54/72 behind his first serve, and he won 54% points 20/37 on his second serve. However, Sascha had to deal with 8 double faults and only 3 aces.

Alexander was battling in converting his break points as he converted only 8%.

On the other side, Jarry was also battling in converting his break points since he converted only 14%. That was one of the key issues for his defeat.

After this contest, the head to head between Zverev and Jarry is 1-1.
