Simona Halep admitted that she was dealing with a knee issue on Wednesday and wasn’t expecting her return to play that way. On Thursday, she took the opportunity to provide her fans with an update.

Halep officially competed in her first match back on March 19th in Miami, after the CAS’s clearance to resume competition following her drug ban. Halep was supposed to compete in both the Madrid Open and Oeiras three weeks later, but a knee injury prevented the Romanian from playing in either competition.

Halep was able to play again this week at a WTA 125 competition in Trophée Clarins, marking her first clay season since she had been out of commission for almost two months. Halep was energized early in the match, winning the opening set 7-5 and going up a set against McCartney Kessler.

But Halep began feeling and inspecting her knee throughout the second set, a clear indication that she was experiencing knee pain and stiffness once more.

She wrote on X: “Well, yesterday didn’t go as I hoped on court. The knee pain that has been lingering since Miami came back and unfortunately, I couldn’t continue. It’s not the way I would have liked to spend my time in Paris, but no one said this comeback was going to be easy.”
