Giorgi's Lawyers Says Her Retirement Not Connected With Tax Issues

The sudden and silent retirement of former world No. 26 Camila Giorgi has sent shockwaves through the tennis community. The dramatic turn of events was further intensified by allegations of tax evasion, raising questions about the true motives behind her decision to quit professional tennis.

Shortly after these reports emerged, Giorgi officially announced her retirement in a social media statement, urging her followers not to believe the stories circulating in the media. In a recent development, her legal team has asserted that her retirement is due to tiredness and is unrelated to any ongoing investigation by Italian authorities.

“Camila will return to Italy soon,” stated her lawyers, Federico Marini and Cristian Carmelo Nicotra. They explained that her departure from her Calenzano residence is temporary, resulting from family disagreements and a need for a pause to reflect on life post-tennis. They emphasized that there is no intention to evade investigations or responsibilities, highlighting Giorgi’s history of transparency and cooperation when required.

Giorgi’s legal representatives clarified that her retirement was not influenced by the €465,000 she owed in unpaid taxes. They noted that she had been planning to end her career for several months. “Since COVID, Camila was thinking of gradually slowing down; she had difficulty coping with the stress of competitive activity,” they explained.

The 32-year-old, who has won four WTA titles, played her last career match at the Miami Open in March, where she was defeated by top-ranked Iga Swiatek in the second round with a score of 6-1, 6-1. Her official retirement date is May 7, 2024, as indicated by the Retired Players list on the International Tennis Integrity Agency website.

Giorgi’s sudden departure and the ensuing controversy have left fans and the tennis world speculating about the true reasons behind her retirement. However, her legal team continues to maintain that her decision was driven by personal and professional fatigue, not the legal challenges she faces.
