Matteo Berrettini follows his compatriot Jannik Sinner, and he decided to retire from the ATP1000 in Rome because of an unspecified illness, leaving his place to luck loser JJ Wolf. Berrettini’s withdrawal raises more questions about his fitness for the upcoming French Open, which starts on May 28, 2023. The Italian Open is considered a significant clay-court tournament leading up to Roland Garros.

Berrettini commented: “I tried to get in shape for tomorrow, but I couldn’t. I’m not ready to compete, I risk hurting myself and then staying out for longer. I had to put my heart aside. I hope to return to Paris.”
