Jannik Sinner will not be competing at the Rome Open in the upcoming weeks due to a hip injury he sustained during the Madrid Open. He had to limp through matches before pulling out of the tournament. The former Roger Federer coach, Ivan Ljubicic, believes it’s important to not undervalue it.
Before Sinner’s withdrawal from Rome, Ljubicic made a statement stating that, although it may not seem significant in the grand scheme of things, it is a matter that should not be ignored because it might have consequences when he moves from concrete to grass and back to the Olympic Games.
Ljubicic expressed his thoughts about Sinner’s injury and said: “The change of surface from concrete to ground, where you slip, is a problem for those who have hip pain like Sinner, or the balls are heavier because they take moisture from the ground, putting more stress on the elbow and arm, as happened to Carlos Alcaraz. Players move more and more and hit harder and at a certain point, the body tells them enough is enough. Jannik’s problem is not serious, but important and not to be underestimated.”
He further added: “The Roland Garros is upon us, Wimbledon is around the corner and the Olympics are immediately after. We saw how many withdrawals there were in Madrid; let’s say that the players at this stage of the season are more sensitive than usual and attentive to what their bodies tell them.”

LWWWWWWWWW Now ranked no.2 (career-high), Sinner has achieved a compiled 28-2 match record in 2024. The Italian is participating in Madrid where he ousted the world no.52 Lorenzo Sonego 6-0 6-3, the world no.72 Pavel Kotov 6-2 7-5 and the world no.17 Karen Khachanov 5-7 6-3 6-3.
Sinner is scheduled to play next in Rome (Internazionali BNL d’Italia). He will start the tournament from the main draw that will commence on the 8th of May.
