Roger Federer talked about the meeting with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after falling short against Novak Djokovic in the 2014 Wimbledon final.

The match, which lasted three hours and 56 minutes, was an exciting clash between the Swiss veteran and the world No. 1 at the time, Novak Djokovic. The Serbian proceeded to win 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4, earning his second Wimbledon title.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were present at the tournament, and at his post-match news conference, Federer was questioned about the duo.

The reporter informed the Swiss that he had the backing of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. In response, he said that he met the couple later and that both of them and he felt helpless after the loss. After losing, Federer talked about how the two encouraged him.

Federer expressed his thoughts about it and said: “Yeah, I did see them afterwards. I wasn’t in a great state. I was unbelievably sad at that moment, just when I left the court, so it was a difficult moment for, I think, the three of us. But they were very sweet to comfort me and wish me well, saying that they enjoyed the match and all these things.”

He further said: “We met previously, so that helped, I think. It makes me very happy to see them being supportive of my game and supportive of tennis. Overall, it’s nice seeing them there at the Wimbledon finals. Also, at the quarters, I think they were there as well. I think it’s wonderful.”
