Raducanu says she lost in Madrid after being “mentally and emotionally exhausted”

Emma Raducanu said she felt tired after losing in straight sets to Argentine qualifier Maria Lourdes Carle in the Madrid Open's opening round.

Raducanu Tired After Madrid Open

Emma Raducanu revealed that she was fatigued after falling to Argentine qualifier Maria Lourdes Carle in straight sets in the opening round of the Madrid Open.

Raducanu, who was wearing straps around her left knee while playing, made numerous unintentional mistakes and had her serve broken six times. Considering the recent comebacks in the Billie Jean King Cup and Stuttgart Open, the 2021 US Open champion’s performance was disappointing.

Raducanu claimed that she was exhausted before the Madrid Open and that this fatigue was the reason behind her early departure on the clay.

Raducanu expressed her thoughts about it and said: “I would say the last few weeks have been a lot. I think from the performance today it was very clear that mentally and emotionally I was exhausted. I was trying to push through, but I was just unable to push through today. I guess the sport is just pretty brutal.”
