Finally… he made it!
Andy Murray beats David Goffin in straight sets to give the decisive point to GB for the Davis Cup title. Andy was never in trouble against Goffin to win 6-3 7-5 7-5. Honestly this Davis Cup edition was a bit too much a 1 man show with Murray winning 11 of the 12 points needed from his team to conquer the title. The “other” point was also crucial as Ward managed to upset Isner 6-7 (4) 5-7 6-3 7-6 (3) 15-13 in the first time against USA (and that point was decisive).
Murray is now the 3rd man in Davis Cup history to have achieved a perfect 8-0 record (singles). The other 2 are McEnroe and Wilander.
Murray: I didn’t know it was even possible to win this
Andy commented “It’s obviously an amazing feeling. I imagine it will take a few days before it really sinks in. But I probably haven’t been as emotional as that after a match that I’ve won. I’ve been pretty upset having lost matches before, but I’d say that’s probably the most emotional I’ve been after a win.
It’s incredible that we managed to win this competition. I didn’t know that would ever be possible. It’s great.”
This is the 10th Davis Cup title for Great Britain, but the last one was back in 1936. Andy made history… once again!
