Matteo Berrettini announced to withdraw from the Mutua Madrid Open in 2024. Berrettini was almost certainly going to the Madrid Open. But the 2021 Wimbledon Championships runner-up revealed on social media that he would not compete in the prestigious Masters 1000 event. The 28-year-old has given two excuses for his withdrawal: a fever and tonsillitis.

Berrettini wrote in an Instagram post: “I have been struggling with an illness the last few days which has now evolved into tonsillitis and a fever. Following another assessment my doctor advised it would be unsafe to try and compete in Madrid.”

The Italian did leave his message with a hopeful suggestion about participating in the Italian Open.

He added: “Now my focus shifts to recovering as quickly as possible and preparing for Rome.”
