Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas are making their compatriots proud of their fantastic achievements. Recently, Maria won her maiden title in Rabat in the first week on May while Stefanos conquered his 3rd title in Estoril.
About Sakkari being Tsitsipas’ girlfriend
Maria and Stefanos are extremely close, and there are strong rumors that Sakkari is Tsitsipas’ girlfriend as they are often seen spending time together and it’s quite clear that there is strong chemistry between the two.
During a recent podcast with the ATP Tennis Radio, Maria explained (in part) her relationship with Stefanos to comment.
“Our moms did know each other before they even got married since they were 15 years old. So that’s a long time ago.
My mom was a player, and his mother was a player. They knew each other since they were Junior players. So I know Stefanos since he was a kid.
He is younger than me, so we played in a different category. Since he started playing the same tournament as me like some Futures and then straight into the grand slams, I know him pretty well.”
About the Hopman Cup
Talking about their experience at the Hopman Cup where earlier in January they defeated Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic in the mixed doubles, Maria added
“I really enjoyed our time there, especially on court but also off the court as we could spend time together.
We got to know each other a little bit more, and I think we will both remember really really well the match against Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic. It was an unbelievable experience for us.”
About Tsitsipas’ success
Talking about Stefanos’ incredible success, Maria added
“Every time I talk about him I get goosebumps because the way he’s playing and the way he’s doing things, he is just an incredible player and an unbelievable talent. I think he was born to do that than to be that well as a tennis player.
So I think also because he worked hard I’m sure he’s going to achieve many more great things. He is not just a player that he’s satisfied with a good result. He always wants more; he always works hard. He is not just lying on the beach, enjoying his life just because he is a top10.
You will see him spending hours on court in the gym taking care of his body.”
