A knee issue has caused Simona Halep to withdraw from a WTA 125 tournament in Oeiras, which is a minor setback for the player at the beginning of the clay season.
To begin her clay season in Portugal, Halep took a main draw wildcard into the Oeiras event next week. The 32-year-old Romanian was already improving her skills on clay at the moment the news was announced.
Everything went according to plan this week until Wednesday when Halep began to feel pain and stiffness in her knee. Halep chose not to panic and to continue practising on Thursday to see what would happen.
She decided to skip Oeiras as a preventive measure, but it was also a sensible one especially since the pain continued on Thursday.
Halep said in a statement posted on her Instagram Story: “Change of plans! My body is telling me it needs more time to adjust to being back in full training. I don’t want to rush as I make my comeback so I won’t be playing in Oeiras next week.”
