Djokovic explains why after Sinner’s rise he is not focused anymore on rankings

A few weeks before competing in the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters, Novak Djokovic believes Jannik Sinner will overtake him as the top player in the ATP rankings.

A few weeks before he plays in the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters, Novak Djokovic predicts Jannik Sinner will surpass him to become the ATP world No. 1 player.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion said that his goal for the 2024 season is not to hold the top spot in the rankings. With 9,725 ATP ranking points, Djokovic leads Sinner by 1,015 points after an incredible record of 420 weeks as the world No. 1 player.

After winning the Miami Open last month, Sinner, who has 8,710 points, became the first Italian player in history to be ranked No. 2 in the world. The 22-year-old Italian has won the Australian Open and the Rotterdam Open in addition to having a blistering 22-1 start to 2024.

Although Djokovic’s absence from multiple tournaments this season may not have caused his world no. 1 ranking to drop, it has certainly brought the race closer. Even though Sinner has been talked about as the best player in Djokovic’s absence, it appears that the remark has a certain truth.

Djokovic opened up about being impressed by the great development of novice player Sinner during the Monte Carlo Masters preparations.

Djokovic stated his remarks and said: “It’s only a matter of weeks before Sinner becomes Number 1. This year’s ranking is not my goal. My priority is to give the best of myself in the sequence which goes from Roland-Garros to the US Open, via Wimbledon and Paris 2024.”
