Former tennis legend compares Carlos Alcaraz to Roger Federer

Carlos Alcaraz has emerged as the next tennis sensation though his play has been incredibly uneven lately. The 20-year-old doesn't appear to mind, as veteran tennis star Mats Wilander likens him to Roger Federer.

Carlos Alcaraz has emerged as the next tennis superstar, but his play has recently been inconsistent. Mats Wilander, a legendary tennis player, compares the 20-year-old to Roger Federer.

To put things in perspective, Alcaraz fell out of the top two this week for the first time since winning the US Open in 2022. Following his victory at the Indian Wells Masters, he was considered the favourite to win the Sunshine Doubles. But Grigor Dimitrov handled him expertly, exposing the weakness in his game.

But according to Wilander, Alcaraz’s unpredictable and variable style will make him one of the all-time great tennis players. Like a particular Swiss athlete who became the first men’s tennis player to win 20 Grand Slams after putting up nearly 15 years of continuous excellence.

Wilander stated his remarks about Alcaraz and said: “When I see Carlos Alcaraz play tennis, it reminds me so much of the great Roger Federer. Again, I normally call him [Federer] the greatest player of all time, and that has nothing to do with the statistics or the results. It has to do with what he meant for the sport and the expectations that people had. Carlos Alcaraz is going through the same thing. I think Carlos Alcaraz could become the second most important tennis player to ever play our sport because of what he brings to the court.”
