Sofya Andreyevna Zhuk, a Russian, was a professional tennis player. born on December 1, 1999, in Moscow, Russia.
Zhuk took up tennis at an early age. From 2014 to 2015, Coach Olivier Jeunehomme oversaw her training at the Belgian Justine Henin Academy. After that, she moved to the US to finish her training at the IMG Academy. At the close of 2018, she moved to Miami, Florida, where she trained under Patricia Tarabini.
Her early achievements were quite remarkable. She set a record in ITF history by being the 17th 14-year-old to win an open tournament at that age when she won her debut competition in 2014 at Shymkent. With this victory, she became a member of an exclusive group that includes two previous world champions, Dinara Safina and Justine Henin.
Zhuk’s career peaked in 2015 when, at the age of 15, she entered Wimbledon as an unseeded competitor. In straight sets, 7–5, 6–4, she defeated fellow Russian and No. 12 ranked junior Anna Blinkova to win the junior girls title. Zhuk’s ability to win every set throughout the Wimbledon championship is astounding. With this victory, she became the second Russian girl to win the Junior Wimbledon title.
After obtaining a wildcard into the main competition at the 2016 Miami Open, Zhuk made her debut as a single on the WTA Tour. Even though she lost the first round match in straight sets to Zhang Shuai, it was a significant turning point in her career.
Over the next few years, Zhuk’s career continued to progress. In 2018, she made it to the second qualifying round of the Australian Open. She went on to the inaugural WTA 125K series final in Newport Beach, California, as well. Even though the young athlete lost the championship match to Danielle Collins, it was still a significant feat.
