Amazing stuff from Stefanos Tsitsipas that finally found the solution against Rafael Nadal in Madrid.
The Greek sensation wasn’t able to even win a set against the King of Clay in their previous 3 encounters to be trashed in their last match in Melbourne 6-2 6-4 6-0. However, Stefanos was determined to change his fortunes against the Spaniard, and he did it in style in Madrid.
The match
Stefanos was the first one to draw blood in the very first game when he broke Nadal (1-0). However, the King of Clay broke back immediately at love (1-1), and the pair started to engage in a fierce battle that ended with 3 consecutive breaks (2 for the Greek and 1 for the Mallorcan) that gave the first set to Tsitsipas.
In the second set, after the Rafa and Stefanos were locked on a 2-2 scoreline, Nadal won 5 consecutive games to lead 2-6 6-4 1-0. At that point, it seemed as this match was about to end with another heart breaker for the Greek. Instead, Tsitsipas got back his focus, and he conquered 5 of the following 6 games to get a 5-2 lead. However, Rafa is notoriously hard to beat on every scoreline, and after breaking Stefanos in the 8th game (5-3), he saved 3 match points on serve before bowing to his opponent. The final score was 6-4 2-6 6-3, and the match ended after 2 hours and 34 minutes.
