Bertens puts up a stunning performance to beat Halep and win the Madrid Open

Bertens beats Halep in straight sets

Kiki Bertens beat Simona Halep 6-4 6-4 to lift the Madrid Open trophy. It was a brilliant performance from Bertens to win the biggest ever title of her career. She put up a great display of serve, movement, heavy strokes, drop shots, volleys. With this performance, it is not difficult to guess that she is definitely a top contender for the French Open title this year.

The Match

The first set was a close one which had a total of five breaks with Bertens getting better of Halep with 3 breaks against 2. It was the world no.3 who made the first break in 4 consecutive breaks in the 1st set with both players scoring 2 breaks. Bertens again broke Halep in the 9th game and then went on to defend her serve to win the first set 6-4.

Bertens opened the second set in a great way by breaking the very first serve of Halep. The world no.3, however, came back strongly and broke Bertens’ serve in a long game to equalize at 2-2. Bertens again broke Halep to lead 3-2 in the set. After this Bertens held her serve to emerge the winner.

With this win, Bertens also become the first woman to win the title without losing a set in the tournament. The 7th seed had to beat three Grand Slam winners on her way to the title.
