British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu expressed satisfaction with her performance at the 2024 Indian Wells tournament, labeling it as “a big success.” Despite her positive assessment, Raducanu didn’t shy away from criticizing the WTA over the issue of constant ball changes, which she believes negatively impacts players.
Raducanu’s journey at Indian Wells began with a commanding victory over Rebeka Masarova, followed by a promising start against Dayana Yastremska, who retired from their match when Raducanu was leading 4-0. However, her campaign faced a tough challenge against world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, where she fought valiantly but ultimately fell short in two sets.
Reflecting on her performance, Raducanu highlighted her improved mindset and on-court demeanor. “It was a good success, I would say,” she remarked. “I think I have handled myself a lot better on the match court. I was a lot more positive and hungry to play, and that showed I think in the tennis that I did play.”
Acknowledging her previous struggles during the Middle East swing, where she faced early exits in Doha and Dubai, Raducanu emphasized the progress she made both in her game and mental approach. “I did make progress here on the match court compared to when I was playing in the Middle East last month,” she explained. “I had a better mentality: just fighting a lot harder for every point. I think I’m proud of myself for that, just really showing up, being hungry and wanting to be there.”
However, alongside her personal achievements, Raducanu didn’t shy away from addressing concerns within the sport, particularly regarding the frequency of ball changes enforced by the WTA. While her Indian Wells run was commendable, Raducanu’s callout highlights her commitment not only to her own success but also to the well-being of her fellow players on the tour.
