At Indian Wells, Emma Raducanu defeated qualifier Rebeka Masarova 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round. The 21-year-old British player broke the Spaniard twice to take a 3-0 lead, but Masarova leveled the score with a third double error from Raducanu.
When Raducanu was ahead 5-2, he was down 0-40 but rallied to win the first set in forty-three minutes.
She expressed her thoughts after winning the match and said: “It was super important for me to get through that. It’s one of the trickiest tournaments, conditions-wise, to play in because it varies so much. I dealt with that well and overcame a really tough opponent.”
She added: “Tennis, I think, is one of the toughest sports out there about focusing and refocusing. Momentum shifts and the scoring system are pretty brutal so I was pleased with how I stayed focused, didn’t get down, and competed hard in tough situations.”
