Rublev received harsh criticism from former tennis umpire Richard Ings for displaying “zero remorse.” The Russian was informed that Ings would have “thrown his appeal in the bin” and “backed the on court officials.”

After furiously objecting to a line judge last week when behind 5-6 in the third set of his Dubai semifinal match against Alexander Bublik, Rublev defaulted.

World No. 5 was furious with the line judge for failing to call a Bublik shot out as he lost the match and was later banned after an umpire was informed by another official that he had seen Rublev curse at one of his colleagues. With support from Bublik, the 26-year-old denied having been speaking in Russian or under oath.

Rublev was fined $36,000, but after an appeal, the ranking points he received from the ATP 500 tournament were restored. The initial punishment had stripped him of them.
