The Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev, who had defaulted at the Dubai Tennis Championships due to rude behavior, successfully appealed and was awarded his prize money and ranking points back. According to the ATP, deducting the player’s entire winnings from prize money and all of the ranking points for the week would be unfair. However, the roughly £30,000 fine has been left in place.
Notably, during his semifinal match at the Dubai Tennis event against Alexander Bublik, Rublev was defaulted for screaming in Russian at the line judge. Rublev was arguing that he never spoke Russian, and he was challenging the judgment.
Rublev insisted that the replays be examined as well. The player was forced to quit the game as the supervisor made the final decision because there was no facility accessible on the trip. Rublev lost his ranking points and prize money for that week, as well as being fined under the rules.
In light of the men’s tennis governing body’s inquiry, the ATP has decided to restore Rublev’s ranking points and prize money from the previous week.
The ATP stated: “The appeals committee concluded that, beyond forfeiting the match, customary penalties associated with a default—namely loss of rankings points and prize money for the entire tournament—would be disproportionate in this case. As such, Rublev retains semi-final points and prize money for the tournament.”
NEW: Andrey Rublev's appeal over his controversial DQ last week has been partially successful.
The ATP have reinstated his prize money and ranking points in Dubai, saying Rublev losing them would be "would be disproportionate in this case".
