At the Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday night, Donna Vekic defeated Canadian qualifier Marina Stakusic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and advanced to the San Diego Open quarterfinals.
The 2022 San Diego runner-up, Vekic, needed precisely two hours to defeat the rising 19-year-old Stakusic, a qualifier with a ranking of No. 283. After placing second in Linz a month ago in the semifinals, Vekic is currently in her second quarterfinal of the season.
On Friday, Vekic will play Katie Boulter of Great Britain in the quarterfinals. Vekic was very excited and expressed her feelings after the match: “It was an interesting match. The conditions were tough. I don’t think I’ve framed so many forehands in my life, but I’m really happy to be through. She played an amazing match, fighting until the end.”
