Ben Shelton proposes a change of scheduling in Atlanta

Ben Shelton has pushed for the Atlanta Open's schedule of matches to be similar to that of the Mexican Open. The matches in the ATP 500 event in Acapulco usually begin late at night, at about 5:30 p.m. local time, in contrast to other major tournaments.

Ben Shelton has advocated for the Atlanta Open to follow the Mexican Open’s match schedule.

Compared to other international tournaments, the ATP 500 event in Acapulco often starts its matches late at night, at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time. In addition to assisting players in avoiding using the courts during hot days, it has resulted in more spectators attending the stadium.

Shelton, who is participating in Mexico right now, encouraged the ATP 250 event in Atlanta to adopt the same schedule as Acapulco on social media. Additionally, he compared his remarks to Andy Murray’s ‘unpopular opinion’ on the South American Masters being added to the ATP Tour schedule.

Shelton wrote in his Instagram stories: “Hot take, like Andy Murray. Unpopular opinion: a tournament like Atlanta in the summer should only have night matches like they do in Acapulco, stadium here is always packed, as are a few other tournaments. It would be better for the fans for sure and probably end up with bigger crowds.”

The young American also mentioned how hot it feels in Atlanta in July, where the tournament is often held. He added: “Daytime in ATL in July is unbearable.”
