Stefanos Tsitsipas has expressed shock at the extent of Hurricane Otis’s destruction in Acapulco.

Hurricane Otis demolished Acapulco in October of last year, causing billions of dollars worth of damage and multiple casualties. Since then, it has been declared to have been the most expensive tropical cyclone to ever hit Mexico.

Tsitsipas discussed his personal experience of seeing the aftermath of the hurricane while speaking on the sidelines of the Mexican Open, which is currently taking place in Acapulco. He expressed shock at the chaos it created and hoped the ATP 500 event cheered up the city’s supporters.

Tsitsipas said: “I was surprised. I didn’t expect the city to behave in such a way. There were a lot of things, a lot of ruins, and a lot of unexpected visuals that I got to witness and see. That is disturbing, of course, because this city has gone through so much in the last few months. I only realized, in fact, now that I got to see how bad the situation was and it’s quite unfortunate what happened here. But I hope with the tennis we’re able to support it and do the best possible thing that we can for the municipality and the city to bring people back together, raise money, and play for a good cause.”

Tsitsipas has further declared that he will donate $1,000 for each ace he hits during the competition this year.

He added: “I will be donating $1,000 for every ace I hit this week in Acapulco. It’s going to be transferred to the relief programs for Acapulco in 2024.”
