Rennae Stubbs, former coach of tennis icon Serena Williams, has once again drawn attention to the contrasting treatment of ATP and WTA players, shedding light on the public’s perception of stars like Matteo Berrettini and Emma Raducanu. Known for her outspoken views on gender disparities in tennis, Stubbs recently made notable remarks regarding the public scrutiny faced by players from both tours.

In a recent podcast, Stubbs candidly addressed the issue, stating, “I mean that’s the one thing I would have to say against Matteo Berrettini for example. You know look and listen we call spades spades in this podcast, okay? And I love Matteo, he is a great guy, he is very good looking, all the stuff we all love about him. He is an amazing tennis player and yes, he has had terrible injuries in the last couple of years. But when he was at his peak, when he was doing really well, he was going to the Met Gala, he was going to this, he was doing photoshoots.”

Stubbs continued by drawing a parallel with Emma Raducanu’s treatment, stating, “You know it’s like I am fine with that coz Jannik got his Gucci stuff and clearly Matteo has the boss stuff. But that’s where you have to, could maybe fault him a little bit. Now a lot of people have given Emma Raducanu a shit of that. You know that’s why it is important to have people around you. They are advising you to say what is your priority.”

The coach emphasized the need to recognize that both Berrettini and Raducanu are young athletes who require guidance and support. Stubbs’ comments underscore the pervasive double standards in how male and female players are perceived and treated by fans and the media alike.

Stubbs has previously spoken out against such biases, particularly noting discrepancies in coverage between ATP and WTA matches. Her latest remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of addressing these inequalities within the tennis community and beyond.

In a sport where talent and dedication should be the primary focus, Stubbs’ insights highlight the imperative of fostering an environment where all players, regardless of gender, are afforded equal respect and opportunities. As the conversation around gender equity continues to evolve, Stubbs remains a vocal advocate for fair treatment and recognition of athletes across all levels of the sport.
