Famous Scottish tennis player Andy Murray is supported by current coach Boris Becker in his controversial opinion of holding tennis events in South America. Murray suggested that the ATP and WTA think about managing more tennis tournaments in South America because of the region’s strong affinity for the game. Becker agrees with Murray that tennis should be played in more locations.
Top players like Carlos Alcaraz, who took part in the most recent ATP 250 Doha Open tournament, are now drawn to South American tournaments. The ATP 500 Rio de Janeiro tournament is scheduled to start this week as well. Here, Murray’s desire to have a specific swing on the tennis circuit has started a whole new dialogue.
Murray recently tweeted that he believed South America should have its own Masters series with exclusive tennis tournament swings because the region’s citizens are so passionate about the game.
Murray wrote in a post on social media: “Unpopular opinion. South America should have a dedicated swing on the tennis tour with its own Masters series. The way the fans support the tournaments there is incredible. Amazing atmospheres are part of their sporting culture. Vamos @atptour!”
Becker supported Murray’s words and said: “Why unpopular? You’re right about your opinion, Andy! Tennis should go to countries/continents where tennis is booming.”
