Maria Sakkari was irritated by a remark that highlighted her and fellow Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas’s recent drop in rankings.
Over the past few years, Tsitsipas and Sakkari have solidified their positions in the men’s and women’s top 10 rankings, respectively. But on Monday, when the rankings were updated, both of them were removed from the elite list.
Given the recent developments, a Greek tennis reporting account on Twitter referred to the pair’s defeat as a historic low for tennis in their nation.
The comment on X read: “A historic low for Greece in the men’s and women’s rankings in the last two and a half years. @steftsitsipas and @mariasakkari dropped out of the top 10, both occupying 11th place in #ATPRankings and #WTARankings, respectively, as of today.”
Sakkari described the comment as unwise and expressed her disappointment with the reporting. She criticized it even further, claiming that such comments would harm tennis in their nation.
Sakkari wrote on X: “Did you give this much thought before writing it? Because of this, tennis will not go forward in our country. You are laughable!”

Now ranked no.11, Maria played her last match on the 21st of February when she was defeated by world no.26 Jasmine Paolini 6-4 6-2 in the 3rd round in Dubai (draw).
Until now, during this year Maria has achieved a compiled 5-4 match record.
Tsitsipas in Los Cabos, ranking, and results in 2024
Currently ranked no.11, Stefanos has a compiled 6-2 record in 2024. Tsitsipas is now competing in Los Cabos where he conquered the world no.72 Aleksandar Vukic 6-3 6-0.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will fight against the world no.100 Aleksandar Kovacevic in the quarter on Thursday at 8:00 pm on ESTADIO MEXTENIS. In the past, they have never played each other as of now in top events.
