Sharapova retires in Wuhan with wrist injury

Maria Sharapova was eager to go back to competitions after a long stop caused by a leg injury. The Russian beauty hasn’t played a match since losing to Serena Williams in the Wimbledon semifinal, but unfortunately the comeback wasn’t that great.

Maria was playing the 1st round in Wuhan against Barbora Strycova, but eventually she had to retire in the 3rd set when she was 7-6 6-7 2-1 up.

Sharapova: It was getting worse and worse…

Maria commented “I got pain in my left forearm. It just got worse and worse as I continued. I just don’t think it’s smart to continue trying to run around the court and trying to hit forehands from the backhand side and compensate other things.

I haven’t played a match in many months. I guess this is the consequence of that. I just have to work on getting it better.”

… I wasn’t to play in Singapore and the Fed Cup

Maria explained that she really wants to play the season’s finale in Singapore and the Fed Cup final “Singapore and the Fed Cup is a big priority,” she said. “I’ll do everything in order to be healthy for that. I don’t know how long it will take for this to recover so I can’t really give a definite answer about next week.”
