Former world No. 1, Andy Roddick, provided insights on Carlos Alcaraz’s serve performance, urging the young talent to enhance this aspect of his game.
Alcaraz faced a challenging quarter-final match against Alexander Zverev at the 2024 Australian Open, where he struggled with his serve, resulting in a four-set loss and seven breaks against him.
Reflecting on Alcaraz’s serve in his Served podcast post-Australian Open, Roddick emphasized its shortcomings, stating, “I think his serve leaves a lot to be desired. That is the one thing that I don’t think has really improved much at all in the last two years.”
Roddick highlighted the disparity between Alcaraz’s serve speeds over time, recalling, “I remember watching him, kind of his breakout – we knew about him – but winning Miami a couple of years ago and he was serving 135, and now I feel like he’s serving 127.”
Alcaraz, a two-time Grand Slam champion, acknowledged the need for improvement in his serve despite noting its advancements, asserting, “I think my serve has improved a lot, but I have to continue improving it and still have a lot to do.”
The critique from Roddick underscores the importance of refining fundamental aspects of Alcaraz’s game to sustain his competitive edge in elite tennis circles. As Alcaraz navigates his career trajectory, addressing weaknesses such as his serve remains crucial for his long-term success on the ATP Tour.
