Belinda Bencic’s confidence is rising as fast as her rankings.
The Swiss sensation managed to overcome Sam Stosur in a hard fought battle 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-3 soon after defeating Yi-Fan Xu 6-0 6-0 in the opener.
Belinda showed her full potential after losing the first set at the tie-break to win 10 of the following 13 games and grab a decisive 4-0 lead in the decider. Stosur managed to come back and win 3 games, but eventually the Swiss sealed the deal to reach the 3rd round.
Bencic: It was very tough
Belinda commented “Obviously it was a very difficult match. Sam was serving great today, so I had a lot of trouble when I was returning. And the third set was difficult too – I had 4-0, then it was 4-3 – so it got a bit tighter. But it was still just one break I lost there, and I’m happy I could just stay calm and serve it out in the end. I’m very happy with this win.”
Next vs. Muguruza
Belinda will play Spanish star Garbine Muguruza in the 3rd round. This is the first time they play each other. We expect many more to come.
