At the 2024 Montpellier Open, Holger Rune got off to a great start against Borna Coric before having trouble with an injury. The young Dane came into this match as the overwhelming favorite, so it was a very odd match for him.
Unfortunately, this encounter put an end to the Danish player’s outstanding form this week. Rune took an early break in the opening set since she appeared to be more focused at the beginning of the play. The way the match transformed in a matter of minutes was quite strange. After a while, Coric would break through and win the opening set, 6-3.
Rune had a lot of problems with his serve since, although he cruised when he struck it, he only did so 50% of the time, and it also appeared as though he was losing some speed. The issue arose from the second serve’s failure to put on any form of pressure.
Although Coric also had trouble with it, he served rather well for the majority of the match. Rune had to take a medical timeout in the second set after falling behind because of what looked to be a forearm injury.
His serve remained a major issue, and his groundstrokes were incredibly weak, nearly pushing rather than hitting. As it became evident that he would not be able to fight in the match, Rune decided to withdraw after being broken for the second time.
It looked like a forearm injury; therefore, there was no use in playing anymore. It was an unfortunate turn of events for the Dane, as he was starting to play well. Rune posted on his official Twitter account and wrote: “Not the way I wanted to end my tournament in Montpellier tonight. I hope to be back soon.”
