Recently, Filippo Volandri, the captain of the Italian Davis Cup squad, spoke about his young compatriot Jannik Sinner, the Australian Open 2024 winner.

To express his opinions, Volandri spoke with a few members of the media and fans who, in his view, had unexpectedly become friends with Sinner. Following Sinner’s decision not to participate in the Davis Cup in Bologna in September, some Italian media outlets published harsh and unfair criticism of Sinner.

Some media outlets unfairly and viciously attacked Sinner’s decision in a great number of articles and editorials. After the young champion’s victory in Melbourne, the same media outlets are suddenly praising him.

Volandri expressed his remarks about it and said: “Well, there were those who suddenly became Jannik’s best friends. You should look inside yourself before using social media to get a couple more likes. Having said that, in my opinion, there are no risks for Jannik. The player is a serious guy, down to earth, and nothing changes.”

He further added: “Once he finishes one goal, he immediately sets another one in front of him. He has a team of professionals who work very well, so there will be no media overexposure. He will do the things he has to do and honor the commitments, but his first thought will be to continue playing at his best.”
