Severin Luthi, renowned for his coaching success with Roger Federer, has parted ways with young talent Holger Rune. Luthi suggests that the timing of their partnership was not ideal, leading to the decision to split earlier rather than later.
The collaboration between Luthi and Rune was announced in December, with the prospect of two coaching legends, including Boris Becker, guiding Rune towards Grand Slam success and a shot at the world No. 1 ranking in 2024.
Rune’s promising start to the year, reaching the Brisbane International final, fueled expectations for a strong Australian Open performance. However, the 20-year-old faced a shocking first-round exit at the hands of Arthur Cazaux, prompting a reassessment of his coaching setup.
In the aftermath of the disappointing Australian Open campaign, Rune and Luthi decided to part ways. Luthi, reflecting on the split, stated, “If you notice this that the timing was not right, then I say: we would rather separate now than in six months. The collaboration was anything but a quick fix.”
Luthi, who enjoyed considerable success coaching Federer, emphasized the careful consideration behind such decisions, acknowledging the significance of this experience as his first coaching role post-Federer’s retirement. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and believes it will contribute to his personal growth.
The tennis world awaits further developments in Holger Rune’s coaching team as he navigates his career and strives for success on the professional circuit.
