The surprising news of Dominic Thiem’s possible retirement shocked fans because his career has been quite unusual and not in a favorable way in recent years.
The Austrian has had difficulty regaining his best tennis since winning the US Open a couple of years ago. His greatest talent was at first difficult for him to discover, but he hasn’t even come close to reaching that level since suffering a serious wrist injury in Mallorca.
Because Thiem injured himself again and lacked confidence when he returned, the entire recovery process was challenging for him. Currently ranked just 90th on the ATP Tour, he was never able to find his greatest form of tennis and struggles to this day.
It appears like time is running out, but he is unable to find the necessary level. Surprisingly, the thirty-year-old acknowledged in a recent talk that if he doesn’t do it soon, it might be the end for him.
Thiem expressed his thoughts in a recent discussion and said: “I see this as my last chance. If I can do it, it can happen quickly. I’ve been back for two years now since the injury, and I finished 2022 at 100 or so and last year at 98.”
He further said: “Should I end the year at 100 again? You have to think about whether the whole thing is still worth it. For two years now, I’ve been in ranking spheres that I don’t want to be in. Of course, that puts a strain on me.”
