INCREDIBLE. Roberta Vinci upsets Serena Williams

We really didn’t see this coming! Serena Williams has been feeling too much the pressure about winning a historical grand slam and eventually she fell almost at the last hurdle.

Serena had to play in the semifinal world no. 43 Roberta Vinci and according to many (let’s say… all) that was meant to be a walk in the park. Things got even easier for the world no.1 after she dismantled the Italian 6-2 in the opener, but Roberta showed an immense heart to win the 2nd set 6-4. In the decider Serena got a seemingly decisive lead after breaking Roberta at the very beginning (2-0 for Serena), but the American was immediately broken soon after (2-1) to drop her serve once again in the 7th game. Finally the Italian held her serve a couple of times to win the match 2-6 6-4 6-4 and produce one of the biggest upsets in tennis history.

Some stats

Incredible enough Serena scored many more points than Roberta (93 – 85), she blasted 16 aces, but eventually she struggled too much with the unforced errors (40). Match Stats.

Vinci: The best moment of my life

Roberta was visibly shaken (in a good way) after the match “It’s like a dream – I’m in the final, I beat Serena – sorry guys, sorry!

For me it’s an amazing moment. It’s incredible. I have so many things in my mind right now! It was an incredible match. I lost the first set, but I still tried to stay aggressive. In the end I was serving and it felt impossible, but I tried to stay focused and not think about the match or Serena’s incredible play.

It’s the best moment of my life.”

Serena: She played really well

The world no.1 was completely demolished after the loss to comment “I don’t think I played that badly. I made more unforced errors than I normally would make, but I think she just played really well. She did not want to lose today. Neither did I, incidentally – but she really didn’t either.”

Next vs. Pennetta

Roberta will play her great friend Flavia Pennetta in an all-Italian final. Head to head is 5-3 for Flavia that has defeated Roberta last time at the 2013 US Open (quarters).
