Following his crushing defeat by Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open, 6-1, 6-2, 6-6 (8-6), 6-3, Novak Djokovic expressed disbelief at his current state of play.
The Serbian was aiming to create history on Sunday by breaking Margaret Court’s 24-grand slam record in her native country. He had a perfect 10-for-10 record after making it to the semi-finals in Melbourne.
But following his loss off the court, Djokovic gave a critical evaluation of his play, emphasizing that he thought the talented youngster had outplayed him completely.
Djokovic expressed his thoughts in the post-match interview and said: “He outplayed me completely. He’s definitely in the final. I’m kind of hot-headed right now. After the match, it’s very difficult to reflect on things more profoundly. Maybe tomorrow in a few days, but I have a lot to be very proud of in terms of what I have achieved here. The streak was going to end, you know, one day.”
Djokovic added: “It was going to happen, and, you know, at least I gave everything I possibly could under circumstances where I didn’t play well, and I lost to, you know, a player that has a very good chance to win his first slam. That’s all it is. But yeah, this has been a very special city—the best, by far, Grand Slam of my career. Yeah, I just hope that I’ll get a chance to come back, yeah, to play at least another time and go through the emotions once more.”
