After her recent Australian Open loss, tennis sensation Coco Gauff opens up about being hard on herself but takes pride in her overall achievements as a teenager.
In a candid reflection, Gauff acknowledges her tendency to be self-critical, stating, “I tend to be hard on myself, so I feel like today I was, like, dang.” Despite the disappointment of the loss, she emphasizes the importance of looking at the bigger picture, realizing the success she has achieved during this stage of her life.
Gauff shares her realization of being in esteemed company, mentioning a stat that places her alongside legends like Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati in terms of wins at Grand Slam events. “I saw that and it made me feel — I don’t know, I just feel like I look at the glass half empty, so I’m negative. Then I looked at that stat and I’m like they had great careers. So, I’m like I’m in the right direction. I just have to remind myself of the journey and not so much of the moment.”
Expressing pride in her accomplishments, Gauff highlights the fulfillment of one of her teenage aspirations. “I am really proud of myself. I did want to win a slam as a teenager, and I did that.” Despite falling short in her recent attempt to secure a second Grand Slam title, Gauff maintains a positive outlook, stating, “Obviously today I was hoping to get No. 2, or at least give myself a chance to get No. 2. It didn’t happen, but I feel like I’m there, yeah. So hopefully I can go only upwards from here.”
Gauff’s introspective comments provide a glimpse into the mindset of a young athlete navigating the highs and lows of a competitive tennis career. As she continues to evolve and mature in the sport, her resilience and self-awareness position her for a promising future on the tennis stage.
