Coco Gauff defeated Marta Kostyuk 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (7-3), and 6-2 to get to the Australian Open semifinals for the first time. This victory set up a possible rematch against Aryna Sabalenka as Gauff overcame a nightmare start and a midmatch slump.
In the first set of the quarterfinals, Gauff was behind 5-1 and facing a must-win second set. However, she rallied and won five of the next six games to take control of the match, which she eventually won in three hours and eight minutes.
Gauff said on the court after the match: “I’m happy and proud of the fight that I showed today. Marta’s a tough opponent; every time we play, it’s a tough match. And yeah, I fought and left it all on the court today.”
Gauff was questioned after the game if the Australian heat caused her any problems because the temperature was approximately 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4 C).
She replied: “Not really; I’m from South Florida so I’m used to the heat. It gets even hotter at home, to be honest.”
