While Daniil Medvedev acknowledged that his defeat in the Australian Open final in 2022 was difficult to accept, he has fully moved on and intends to improve in Melbourne after two years.

To win his first Australian Open, Medvedev most likely will have to beat Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. To win his 11th Australian Open and 25th Grand Slam, Djokovic is the overwhelming favorite, especially after defeating Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets with what may be his greatest performance of the competition.

Medvedev talked about how much he had evolved in the seven years that had passed since that initial setback, and then he shared his favorite quality with one of his most formidable opponents.

Medvedev expressed his thoughts in a recent interview and said: “I think I have matured a lot since then. At the time, I was taking tennis seriously when I was on the court, but kind of, let’s call it, maybe 90% or something like that. I was already in the top 100 [and] gave Novak a tough time.”

He added: “I think that’s what sometimes people don’t know about Novak. He can be tough on the court like I can be. He can be this and that. But since the first time I met him—I was 400 in the world and now I’m No. 3 in the world, No. 1 in the world—I feel like he treats me like before. For sure, I became more of a rival than before for him. But the treatment off-court when we see each other is the same. I like this about him. I find this very good in him as a person.”
