Rock solid Federer reaches the US Open quarter

Once again Roger Federer was too good for his opponent.

The Swiss Legend had to face a dangerous Isner in the 4th round of the US Open, but he knew very well what to do.

Roger took good care of his serve (he was never broken) and he was also quite effective in his return games. The Maestro managed to break John only at the very end (last game), but he was always there putting pressure to the American giant.

Roger won the first set at the tie-break at 0 (!!!) without much struggle. Also the second set went straight to the tiebreak, but this time Roger found himself 3-5 down (and that is no good against a big server). Eventually the world no.2 recovered to win the tiebreak playing a couple of great shots down the line at the end. In the 3rd set Isner looked tired as he was struggling to hold serve while Federer was much more “stable”. The American no.1 had to surrender his serve for the first time in the very last game. Federer won 7-6 (0) 7-6 (6) 7-5.

Federer: The key of the match was my serve

Roger commented “John is one of the best servers in the game. Especially the pace on his second serve, it’s unreal. You just have to hang around and not drop your own serve. I guess that was the key to the match.”

… about winning a tie-break at 0

You always expect to play a tiebreak against Isner, but you never expect to win it at 0. Roger explains what happened “I think it started with a good pickup by me. He hit and charged the net so I had to hit a tough pass. Then I served really well, had a few looks on his second serves and had perfect timing on them. You have to get a bit lucky to win a tie-break seven-love against John, but as long as you win the tie-break, the score doesn’t really matter.”

Next vs. Gasquet

Roger will play Richard Gasquet in the quarters. Head to head is 14-2 for Roger that is the super favorite to reach the semifinal.
