The 2023 ATP Coach of the Year Award went to Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi, the two mainstays of Jannik Sinner’s coaching staff. They are acknowledged and credited for having had a significant impact on Sinner’s development into a world-class athlete. The Italian hit several career highs last season, most notably winning his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto.
Having an outstanding coaching setup is a major factor in the consistent success of the best tennis players in the world. They are fully aware of the necessary steps to enhance their games. This clarifies Sinner’s decision to pursue two of the best tennis minds available to him.
Since his abrupt separation from Riccardo Piatti in February 2022, Sinner has been working full-time with his countryman Simone Vagnozzi. When Cahill joined in the summer of 2022, Vagnozzi, a former ATP pro, was already employed as a full-time coach. The Australian has been given responsibility for the psychological aspect of things.
According to Sinner, Vagnozzi’s role is tactical and technical, while Cahill handles the emotional aspect. Sinner expressed his thoughts about both and said: “I’m talking in general, I think the tactical/technical part is more for Simone. The emotional part, talking in the right way before the match, giving confidence, not only to me but also to the team, is a little bit more Darren’s ‘job.’ But I think the mix of both of them, it’s nice. You know, they have a lot of respect for each other. Nobody wants to go over one, so they are always on the same line.”
He added: “I think that’s one key thing I have in my team, no? If there is a problem, we talk together, we find a solution together, & honestly, we are all pretty relaxed. We know that every match is important, that every tournament is important, but it’s also more important to stay in a good mood always, no? Sometimes you are a bit more nervous, which is normal. But I think talking generally, it’s a good team to be around.”

At the moment ranked no.4 (career-high), the Italian has a composed 3-0 record in 2024. Sinner is now having a run at the Australian Open where he beat the world no.59 Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-4 7-5 6-3, the world no.161 Jesper De Jong 6-2 6-2 6-2 and the world no.29 Sebastian Baez 6-0 6-1 6-3.
Jannik Sinner will fight against the world no.15 Karen Khachanov in the 4th round. Their current head to head is 2-1 for Sinner.
