During her eight months on the Hologic WTA Tour, 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva has reached several notable milestones. Though it was the first time Andreeva had triumphed from match point down at the tour level, her 1-6, 6-1, 7-6[6] comeback victory over Diane Parry in the Australian Open’s third round was noteworthy for her growth as a competitor.

Andy Murray, who won three times in the first two months of 2023 alone, is no stranger to saving match points, so it was fitting that the former ATP No. 1 was quick to acknowledge Andreeva’s achievement.

Murray wrote on X: “Andreeva down 5-1 in third. Commentator ‘She needs to work on the mental side of her game. she’s too hard on herself when she’s losing’ 30 minutes later 7-6 Andreeva wins. Maybe the reason she turned the match around is because of her mental strength. Maybe she turned the match around because she is hard on herself and demands more of herself when she’s losing/playing badly. Winner.”

When Andreeva learned of Murray’s remarks, she became crazy with excitement. She said: “I didn’t think that he would watch a match, then after he would tweet, he would comment something. Honestly, I will try to print it out somehow. I don’t know, I will put it in a frame. I will bring it everywhere with me. I will maybe put it on the wall so I can see it every day.”

Satisfied with her fresh skills, Andreeva also issued a cautionary note to potential rivals. She added: “It’s good to win when you’re fighting for every point. I think I will have a lot of matches like this in my career. I don’t care how I win exactly with the score and the time, I just want to win.”
