Federer demolishes Mayer

Roger Federer has a massive start of this US Open campaign with an extremely convincing 1st round against Leonardo Mayer.

Roger was wary about the Argentine as the Maestro had to save 5 match points in their only match (Shanghai 2014), so life could have been difficult also this time. Eventually Roger played at his very best to beat him 6-1 6-2 6-2 in just 77 minutes. Match Stats.

Federer: Today it was much faster than Shanghai

Roger commented “You just don’t know how these matches are played out. Looking ahead, it definitely looked like a very tough draw in the first round. For me, anyways. But then again, today was much faster than Shanghai. It’s a different place and different conditions. It allowed me to play fast-court tennis against him, which wasn’t really the case in Shanghai. Plus I wasn’t quite sure how conditions were there. The ball was flat and wasn’t bouncing at all.

I’m playing very well at the moment. Playing with confidence. Got off to a good start. Then the match obviously can be very different… I feel good now. I actually wasn’t so confident yesterday and today. I just felt like maybe could be one of those matches I couldn’t see it coming.” 

Next vs. Darcis

Roger will play next against Darcis. They have never played each other so far.
